EMANUEL MARTINEZ - Conductor & Teacher

Emanuel Martinez began to play the piano at the age of 6 with his mother. After that he never stopped learning and playing the piano.

Martinez has also learned how to play accordion, violin, bassoon, trumpet, percussion and the organ, which has become the main instrument he has played in concerts.

After studying Orchestral and Choral Conducting at the Collonges Sous-Salève University (1970-1974) in France, and studying more about Organ in Geneva (Switzerland) and in Valencia (Spain), he developed his professional activity in Brazil for 50 years as a professor and conductor of several orchestras and choirs, whether they were professionals, amateurs or students.

As a guest conductor, he performed in front of several choirs and orchestras in Brazil: Paraná Symphony Orchestra; Londrina Symphony Orchestra; Ribeirão Preto Symphony Orchestra;  São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra; Goiás Symphony Orchestra;  Symphony Orchestra of the Music Workshop of Curitiba; Camerata Antiqua of Curitiba; Symphony Orchestra of the Music Festival of Santa Catarina -

Emanuel Martinez is a frequent guest throughout Brazil, as well as in France, Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Spain and Japan.

For 30 consecutive years he was the main conductor of Teatro Guaíra in the city of Curitiba, Brazil (1985-2015) where he worked as musical director and conductor of the Symphonic Choir (1985-2022), and Symphony Orchestra of the State of Paraná (1985-2015), and also the camera choir “Madrigal Brasil” (2008-2015).

In parallel with his professional activity at Teatro Guaíra, he worked as a teacher of instrumental direction (band and orchestra) and choir, as well as a teacher of theoretical subjects at the Music School Belas Artes of Parana (1999-2010); 

Besides that he has worked as director of the Conservatories: SESC / MG in Belo Horizonte (1978-1980);  Director of the School of Music of the State of Maranhão in São Luiz (1980-1985);  Director of the Conservatory of Music of Curitiba - CCA (1985-1990).

Alongside his activity as a conductor, he develops didactic activities in music schools, universities, master classes, seminars and music festivals.

Since 1985, he has performed in music festivals throughout Brazil with several harmony orchestras formed by young people. And has participated as a musical jury in different competitions of Harmony and Fanfares, in addition to teaching conducting courses, promoted by the National Art Foundation. - FUNARTE and by the Secretary of Culture of Paraná.

He has worked as artistic director of Choir Festival of Paulo Eiró Theater - São Paulo (1974-1976);  of 1st Art Week in Belo Horizonte (1978); Choir Festival of São Luiz do Maranhão (1981-1983) and the Music Festival of Câmara de Curitiba (1999 and 2000).

From 1986-2022 he was the artistic director of the Symphonic Choir of PR at the Guaíra Theater and of the Novafilarmonia Orchestra, Curitiba; from 1990 to 2008 he was assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Music Workshop of Curitiba – PR;  from 1986 to 2002 worked as assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Paraná;  from 1999 to 2011 worked as a conductor of the Orchestra of the University of Paraná - School of Music Belas Artes of Paraná.

In his repertoire there are some of the first auditions in Brazil and South America, such as: "Missa Solemnis" by Antonio Rayol, recorded on disc and video at FUNTEVÊ (RJ), "Concerto for guitar and orchestra in D major, Op. 99, by Mario Castelnuovo - Tedesco (1990), "Concerto for two guitars and orchestra in G major, Op.  201 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (2001);  and the first South American audition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" (1991) and Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio" (1993).

His work has been recognized by critics from all over Brazil, receiving tributes from the Municipality of Curitiba (1987 and 1996) as conductor of the Guaíra Theater and of the Symphonic Choir of Paraná;  Legislative Assembly of the State of Paraná (1991);  Brazilian Army (1992), in addition to being qualified to receive, at a national level, by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, the “Best of the Year” award in 1995 as choir conductor.

He is the author of ten books, they are the following: CONCERT: Historical and Generic Aspects.  (EMBAP, Curitiba - 2000);  CONCERNING SYMPHONY.  (EMBAP, Curitiba - 2000);  Aspects of the History and Form of the SYMPHONY.  (EMBAP, Curitiba - 2000);  SYMPHONIC POEM: aspects of language.  (EMBAP, Curitiba - 2001);  OPERA: a new language.  (EMBAP, Curitiba - 2002);  CORAL MUSIC - sacred and secular.  (UNASP, S. Paulo - 2006);  a collection of works for organ and piano: REFLECTIONS (VP Editions, Rio de Janeiro - 1986);  CORAL CONDUCTING – Basic Principles (DOM BOSCO, Curitiba – 2001);  FUNDAMENTALS AND CONDUCTING TECHNIQUES - Technical aspects of conducting a choir and an orchestra (2022);  ALCHEMY OF CORAL SINGING (2021).

In 2006, he directed the closing concert of the XXIV Curitiba Music Workshop – PR;  in 2007 he directed the opera Rei Arthur by Purcell with the String Orchestra of the XXV Music Workshop of Curitiba – PR.

In 2008, he participated in the competition for assistant conductor of the UNINORTE Symphony Orchestra in Asunción – Paraguay, being approved for the role.

Also in 2008, in Brazil, he did a musical tour with 74 concerts with Madrigal Paideia having as repertoire works "a cappella" by Heitor Villa-Lobos, anticipating the 50th anniversary of the composer's death, for the project SONORA BRASIL SESC NACIONAL.

A commemorative DVD and CD were recorded on the occasion. With the Symphonic Choir of Paraná, Martinez traveled with the singer Andrea Bocelli during the Brazilian tour (2009) in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; toured with the Chamber Orchestra of S. Bento do Sul in several cities in the State of Santa Catarina (2009); he also directed a concert with the Positivo Camerata of Universidade Positivo in honor of the lyrical singer Rio Novello (2010); performed a concert with the Rio Grande do Norte Symphony Orchestra (2012);  he was a teacher and conductor of the Orchestra at the Cascavel Music Festival (1989-2016);  he was conductor of the Orchestra and professor at the Paranaguá Music Festival (2011-2012);  permanent conductor of Teatro Guaíra (1985-2015), conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of São Bento do Sul - SC (2012-2013);  conductor of the Madrigal of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal/RN (2015-2016);  Professor of the choral conducting seminar of the music course at the UFRN School of Music (May/2016);  conductor of the concert in honor of UFRN Madrigal's 50th anniversary at the closing ceremony of the UFRN Madrigal celebrations (December 2016); as well he was a professor at the seminar within the Coros do Maranhão festival - FEMACO São Luis/MA (October 2016);  Emanuel Martinez has worked as a professor of choral conducting and directed the Choir and Chamber Orchestra of the III Gramado in Concert (February/2017);  conductor of Coral Canto do Povo - Natal/RN (June/2017);  Jury for the Elisabete Anderle Cultural Incentive Award in Florianópolis/SC (July/2017);  He directed the Opera “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II (2018) and “Orpheo ed Euridice” by Gluck (2019) in Curitiba.

Since 2022, when he moved to Europe, he has worked by invitation, as a teacher, orchestra and choir conductor. In the first half of this year he worked with the Portuguese Academic Orchestra and Choir. He is currently developing educational and artistic activities with the Academic Orchestra and the Portuguese Academic Choir in Lisbon.  Contact
